The burden of HIV/AIDS
is falling disproportionately on
heterosexual African American women.
It's getting worse.

Facts:

AIDS is the leading cause of death for black women aged 25-34 years.

Heterosexual contact was the source of 80% of women with newly diagnosed
infections.

African-American women are 23 times as likely to be infected with the Aids
virus as white women and account for 71.8% of new HIV cases among women in
29 US states.

AIDS is the 3rd leading cause of death for black women aged 35-44 years.

AIDS is the 4th leading cause of death for black women aged 45-54 years.

Of the 126,964 women living with HIV/AIDS, 64% were black, 19% were white,
15% were Hispanic, 1% were Asian or Pacific Islander, and less than 1% were
American Indian or Alaska Native.

HIV infection is the leading cause of death for African American men aged 25
to 44 years.

59% more African Americans have been tested for HIV than white Americans.

In Washington, DC, alone, 1 in 20 residents is living with HIV - roughly the
same proportion of people as in the sub-Saharan region of Africa.

Of the 1.1 million Americans living with HIV, 20 percent do not know they are
infected, raising the odds that they will infect others.
